TAX VOTE TROUBLE
(2007-06-25)
(wgvu) - A WIDELY ANTICIPATED VOTE TO RAISE TAXES
IN MICHIGAN HAS SOME LAWMAKERS SWEATING BULLETS.
A FEW REPUBLICANS AND DEMOCRATS IN CLOSELY CONTESTED DISTRICTS
COULD FACE RECALL EFFORTS IF THEY VOTE IN FAVOR OF AN INCREASE.
LAWMAKERS IN BOTH PARTIES WORRY ABOUT THE CONSEQUENCES IN THEIR
DISTRICTS NO MATTER WHICH WAY THEY VOTE.
THE TAX PROPOSAL HASN'T YET BEEN SPECIFIED, BUT IT'S EXPECTED TO
ORIGINATE IN THE DEMOCRAT-CONTROLLED HOUSE. BEHIND-THE-SCENES
PRESSURES HAVE SURFACED ON AND OFF FOR WEEKS, WITH A VOTE POSSIBLE
AS EARLY AS THIS WEEK.
LEGISLATORS MOST LIKELY WILL HAVE TO DECIDE WHETHER TO RAISE THE
PERSONAL INCOME TAX AS PART OF A PLAN TO ELIMINATE A POTENTIAL 1.6 BILLION-DOLLAR DEFICIT.
