STRAWBERRY FEST DEBACLE

(wgvu) - - VIOLENCE OVER THE WEEKEND HAS OFFICIALS
IN BELLEVILLE THINKING ABOUT CANCELING THE NATIONAL STRAWBERRY
FESTIVAL.
A MOB OF ABOUT A THOUSAND PEOPLE STOPPED TRAFFIC, POUNDED ON
VEHICLES AND HURLED BOTTLES AT POLICE OFFICERS AS FIGHTS ERUPTED
THROUGHOUT THE TINY WAYNE COUNTY CITY.
THE POLICE CHIEF SAYS HIS NINE OFFICERS AND 16 RESERVES WERE NO
MATCH FOR THE TROUBLEMAKERS. HE SAYS LUCKILY NO ONE WAS HURT.
THE HEAD OF THE AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE SAYS THE ANNUAL
THREE-DAY EVENT IS A MAJOR FUNDRAISER FOR THE CITY. SHE HOPES IT
WILL SEE ITS 32ND YEAR.
