STATE BUDGET
(2007-06-18)
(wgvu) - THE LEGISLATURE APPEARS CLOSE TO APPROVING A NEW STATE BUSINESS TAX. SO GOVERNOR GRANHOLM IS TURNING MORE OF HER ATTENTION TO SELLING THE PUBLIC ON A TAX HIKE.
SHE SAYS THE STATE WILL ELIMINATE SOME PROGRAMS, AND COME UP WITH REFORMS THAT CUT COSTS. BUT SHE SAYS THE STATE WILL ALSO NEED MORE REVENUE TO FULLY ADDRESS A DEFICIT OF MORE THAN $1.5 BILLION DOLLARS.
THE GOVERNOR WILL ADDRESS EDUCATORS IN GRAND RAPIDS TODAY. SHE WILL SAY A TAX HIKE IS NEEDED TO AVOID CUTS TO SCHOOLS.
BUT OPPOSITION TO TAX HIKES IS ALSO BUILDING. AN ANTI-TAX GROUP IS THREATENING TO LAUNCH RECALLS AGAINST LAWMAKERS WHO VOTE FOR MORE REVENUE. AND SPORTS TEAM OWNERS AND FANS ARE ORGANIZING TO OPPOSE A PROPOSED LUXURY TAX ON MANY TYPES OF ENTERTAINMENT.
