Immigration Bill Affects Michigan
(2007-06-13)
(wgvu) - The immigration bill that President
Bush is pushing to revive in the Senate proposes changes in
seasonal worker regulations.
Some say the changes would make hiring foreign nationals much
more costly and cumbersome.
Salmon and other workers like him are following the Washington
back-and-forth warily.
Resort operators on Mackinac Island are just as worried. They
deal with piles of paperwork, and some spend thousands of dollars
annually getting visas for foreign workers.
Many businesses around the country do likewise, from innkeepers
in Maine to Maryland crab processors and Arizona landscapers.
It's a matter of survival. These employers say there aren't
enough Americans willing to make beds, mow lawns, wash dishes and
do other unglamorous tasks that pay modestly yet require lots of
sweat.
