Smoking Ban
(2007-06-12)
(wgvu) - Six-year-old Wyatt Clark and others plan
to testify in favor of a statewide ban on smoking in restaurants at
a Michigan legislative hearing tomorrow.
When Wyatt, of Ferndale, is exposed to secondhand cigarette
smoke, his asthma can get triggered so badly that he is rushed to
the emergency room. It keeps him from getting to go bowling or
eating at many restaurants.
Similar smokefree bills got just one hearing and never received
a vote when the Legislature was controlled by Republicans.
But now Democrats lead the House, bringing hope to supporters of
a smoking ban.
The legislation is opposed by restaurants and bars, which argue
they should be free to decide whether to allow smoking based on
free-market competition without intrusion from the government.
