(wgvu) - YPSILANTI, Mich. (AP) - An independent investigation finds
Eastern Michigan University violated federal law by not adequately
informing students and staff about a student's death.
University officials have been criticized for their handling of
the December rape and murder of 22-year-old Laura Dickinson.
The report from Detroit law firm Butzel Long says the university
did not back off earlier statements that the cause of death was
undetermined despite law enforcement asserting foul play.
The report also accuses Vice President of Student Affairs Jim
Vick of ordering the shredding of a document that included details
about her room and the condition of her body.
Board of Regents Chairman Thomas Sidlik said the report reveals
a systematic failure, and the university got it wrong.
