HOT FUZZ
(2007-06-08)
(wgvu) - Hot Fuzz is a British comedy from the team that made the delightful zombie send up Shaun of the Dead. Actor writer Simon Pegg and director Edgar Wright set their satirical sights on Cop Buddy movies, like Lethal Weapon and Bad Boys, with hilarious results. Pegg is Sgt. Nicholas Angel, a hard-nosed no-nonsense police officer whose excellence causes his superiors to transfer him to a country post. (clip) That's Bill Nighy, and he's one of several great UK actors who have roles in Hot Fuzz, including Paddy Considine, Timothy Dalton, Jim Broadbent, and Steve Coogan. But the real treat is Nick Frost, who played Pegg's best friend in Shaun of the Dead, and plays Angels' partner, Danny Butterman. Danny's idea of a police officer was shaped by the fantasies of Hollywood. (clip) At first Danny irritates Angel, but he tries to shape him up, too, and remind him of what a real cop does. (clip) The seemingly innocent and na ve hamlet that Angel has been sent to is suddenly stricken with a series of mysterious deaths. Angel quickly senses that murder is afoot, although the townspeople, and his own police chief try to persuade him otherwise. Soon Danny gets his wish for action, and in the process the filmmakers poke fun at every clich of Cop Buddy movies. I saw Hot Fuzz with a bunch of my own buddies, and we laughed heartily. Highly recommended.

Fracture is the latest vehicle for veteran Anthony Hopkins, and his role is one of familiarity. He plays Ted Crawford, a brilliant and wealthy man, who takes drastic measures when he realizes his wife is cheating on him. (clip) Willy Beachum is the Assistant D.A. who's prosecuting Crawford, and he's played by Ryan Gosling. Willy is a rising legal star, who is in the midst of transferring to a prestigious private firm when he gets the Crawford case. Crawford has an angel, though. (clip) Fracture is a nifty cat and mouse suspense movie that has an atmospheric feel to it. Shadows are pierced with golden light that shimmers with dust. Whenever Hopkins is on camera, his teeth and eyes seem to glow with evil. Gosling is like a musician riffing with all his chops. I found Fracture to be a bit slow moving, but in the end, a somewhat satisfactory diversion.
