WAITRESS
(2007-06-08)
(wgvu) - Jenna is a nice girl, and she has a talent. Played by Keri Russell, she's a waitress at a pie shop, and she makes all their pies, most of which are original creations. The shop is owned by a old Joe, a curmudgeon, who is played by Andy Griffith, and he adores her pies. (clip) Jenna is unhappy, because she's trapped in a loveless marriage to a controlling husband. And that situation gets worse after she takes a pregnancy test in the diner's bathroom. (clip) Earle is her husband, played by Jeremy Sisto, but he's more like a pimp or a prison guard in his behavior. (clip) Jenna gets more mixed up when she falls in love with her doctor, played by Nathan Fillian. (clip) And all around Jenna, things are changing, with Old Joe, with the other waitresses, played by Cheryl Hines and the movie's writer and director, Adrienne Shelley, and with Cal, the grouchy manager, played by Lew Temple. Jenna has a plan, she's saving money to leave Earle, and wants to win a world famous pie contest. But the pregnancy has thrown the proverbial wrench.

Waitress is a marvelous little movie. It's like the many pie confections that are the movie's motif: sweet, and delicious, with love at its center. Adrienne Shelley was finishing up the post-production of Waitress when she was murdered in her New York apartment building by a construction worker. She was best known as an actress in Hal Hartley's quirky movies. She began directing short films and features at the end of the 90s. She will be missed.
