HOUSE ENERGY PLAN
prevent a House energy plan that would block California and other
states from regulating tailpipe emissions.
The House Democrats say they can't back legislation that would
limit California's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions or
the Environmental Protection Agency's ability to regulate them.
A hearing is being held today on the energy plan. The plan
proposes that the auto industry meet gas mileage standards of at
least 36 miles per gallon for passenger cars after 20-21 and 30
miles per gallon for trucks after 20-24.
The plan also would create a low-carbon fuel standard and push
the auto industry to boost production of vehicles running on
alternative fuels such as ethanol.
