SCHOOL SKATEBOARDING
Ottawa County sees skateboarding as a way to get students to show
up for classes.
Chuck Bailey and one of his students want to make skateboarding
a school-sponsored sport. They're working to drum up interest among
other school districts.
About a dozen students at New Options Alternative High in
Allendale Township gather after school in the gym to skateboard.
They've compiled a portfolio of ramp designs and plan to build them
at the school.
Bailey worked out an agreement recently with the owner of a
skating rink to host a skateboarding competition this week in
Holland. The owner sponsors a team from West Ottawa High.
