MEDICAL POT
drive to get a medical-marijuana initiative on next year's
statewide ballot.
The Coalition for Compassionate Care says it wants people with
cancer, AIDS and other illnesses to be able to grow and use small
amounts of marijuana for pain relief.
The group plans to gather 550-thousand signatures. It needs just
over 304-thousand signatures to be validated for the initiative to
go to the Legislature.
The issue would appear on the November 2008 ballot if lawmakers
reject it or don't vote on it.
Current Michigan law prohibits marijuana use for any reason.
Twelve other states permit its medicinal use by patients.
