KIDS COUNT-MICH
(2007-05-22)
(wgvu) - A NEW STUDY SAYS THAT TOO MANY MICHIGAN MOTHERS
ARE HAVING BABIES WHO ARE PREMATURE OR WEIGH TOO LITTLE.
THE ANNUAL KIDS COUNT IN MICHIGAN STUDY OUT TODAY SAYS THE
NUMBER OF LOW-BIRTHWEIGHT BABIES CONTINUES TO BE HIGH.
THAT'S DESPITE A DECADE-LONG DECLINE IN THE NUMBER OF TEEN
MOTHERS, MOTHERS WHO SMOKE DURING PREGNANCY AND MOTHERS WITH
LIMITED PRENATAL CARE.
IT ALSO SAYS FEWER TEENS ARE GETTING PREGNANT A SECOND TIME.
THE RATE OF PREMATURE BIRTHS FELL FOUR-POINT-TWO PERCENT BETWEEN
1993-1995 AND 2003-2005, WHILE THE RATE OF UNDERWEIGHT NEWBORNS
INCREASED SEVEN-POINT-SEVEN PERCENT.
