$2,500 FOR TIPS LEADING TO THE ARRESTS OF ANYONE
SELLING OR BUYING STOLEN COPPER.
BOTH COMPANIES REPORT A SURGE IN COPPER WIRE THEFTS THIS YEAR.
TOP OFFICIALS SAY THE SLICING AND STEALING OF COPPER CABLE HAS
LED TO SOME 25,000 COMBINED PHONE AND POWER INTERRUPTIONS IN
DETROIT SINCE THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR.
COPPER PRICES HIT AN ALL-TIME HIGH AT ABOUT $4.00 A POUND
LAST MAY. THE PRICE WAS $3.70 PER POUND LAST
WEEK.
