RESTAURANT OWNER SENTENCED
(2007-05-15)
(wgvu) - NN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - The wife of the owner of the popular La
Shish (SHEESH) restaurant chain was sentenced today to a year and a
half in prison for tax evasion.
Elfat El Aouar was also ordered to spend three years on
supervised release and report to a probation officer.
El Aouar was the chain's former financial manager. She pleaded
guilty to helping her husband evade about one and a half (m)
million dollars in federal taxes in a plea deal in December.
Prosecutors had recommended she spend 30 to 37 months in prison.
The government says El Aouar helped husband Talal Chahine skim
more than 20 (m) million dollars from the chain between 2001 and
2005.
Chahine remains a fugitive in Lebanon.
