OTTAWA SMOKING
(2007-05-15)
(wgvu) - THE SMOKE FREE MOVEMENT IS GROWING IN OTTAWA COUNTY. COUNTY COMMISSIONERS WILL SOON HAVE WO PROPOSALS TO LIMIT PUBLIC SMOKING.
THE FIRST WOULD BAN SMOKING ON COUNTY MAINTAINED PUBLIC BEACHES. THE LATEST INVOLVES PUTTING WORKPLACES OFF LIMITS FOR SMOKING IN PUBLIC AND PRIVATE LOCATIONS COUNTYWIDE.
BESIDES BANNING ON-THE-JOB SMOKING, IT WOULD ALSO COVER PLACES INCLUDING LIBRARIES, TAXIS AND BUSSES, MUSEUMS AND SPORTS ARENAS.
MARCIA KNOL IS CHAIR OF THE SMOKE FREE OTTAWA COUNTY COALITION. SHE SAYS THE ONE TYPE OF BUSINESS NO CITY OR COUNTY IN MICHIGAN CAN REGULATE IS **RESTAURANTS - WHICH ARE CONTROLLED BY A STATE LAW WHICH ONE GROUP IN PARTICULAR WANTS *KEPT ON THE BOOKS.
THE MICHIGAN RESTAURANT ASSOCIATION ARGUES IT SHOULD BE UP TO INDIVIDUAL ESTABLISHMENTS AND NOT A MATTER TO BE LEGISLATED.
AND ALTHOUGH SHE SAYS HEALTH SHOULDN'T BE A PARTISAN ISSUE, KNOL IS HOPING WITH THE NEW DEMOCRATIC MAJORITY IN THE HOUSE, THIS MIGHT BE THE YEAR A RESTAURANT SMOKING BAN GETS THROUGH OR AT LEAST GETS SOME MORE ATTENTION.
