OBAMA-AUTOS
(2007-05-07)
(wgvu) - PRESIDENTIAL HOPEFUL BARACK OBAMA SAYS U-S ENERGY
POLICY CHANGES WILL REFUEL GLOBAL COMPETITION BETWEEN U-S AND
FOREIGN AUTO MAKERS.
OBAMA WAS TO SPEAK AT THE DETROIT ECONOMIC CLUB.
ACCORDING TO TEXT OF THE ILLINOIS SENATOR'S REMARKS PROVIDED TO
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS, HE SAYS FOR TOO LONG FOREIGN AUTOMAKERS HAVE
INVESTED IN FUEL-EFFICIENT TECHNOLOGY, WHILE THEIR DOMESTIC
COUNTERPARTS HAVE STOOD IDLE.
HIS PLAN WOULD ENCOURAGE THE PRODUCTION OF HYBRID VEHICLES AND
OFFER U-S AUTOMAKERS HEALTH CARE ASSISTANCE FOR RETIREES.
AUTOMAKERS WOULD BE REQUIRED TO INVEST HALF OF THEIR SAVINGS TOWARD
PRODUCTION OF FUEL-EFFICIENT VEHICLES.
