EPA AGREES NOT TO DUMP KALAMAZOO RIVER SEDIMENT IN CITY LANDFILL

KALAMAZOO, MICH. (AP) - THE U-S ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY
SAYS IT HAS TENTATIVELY AGREED WITH TWO COMPANIES NOT TO SEND
CONTAMINATED SEDIMENT FROM THE KALAMAZOO RIVER TO A NEIGHBORHOOD
LANDFILL IN 2007.
THE E-P-A SAYS NO DECISION HAS BEEN MADE REGARDING DISPOSAL
SITES FOR MATERIAL TO BE EXCAVATED IN 2008. CLEANUP, HALTED EARLIER
THIS MONTH TO ALLOW FOR PUBLIC COMMENT, WAS TO RESUME MAY SECOND.
THE MOVE WAS HAILED AS A VICTORY BY MANY WHO OBJECTED TO THE USE
OF A FORMER PAPER MILL SITE AS A LANDFILL. THE SEDIMENT IS
CONTAMINATED WITH P-C-BS, A POTENTIALLY CARCINOGENIC POLLUTANT.
THE E-P-A ANNOUNCED IN FEBRUARY THAT TWO COMPANIES IT IDENTIFIED
AS RESPONSIBLE HAD AGREED TO HELP CLEAN UP A MILE-AND-A-HALF
SECTION OF THE RIVER.
