Karmanos cancer center will buy, convert Detroit hospital
(2007-04-24)
(wgvu) - The Karmanos Cancer Institute says it plans to
buy Detroit's Riverview and convert it for use as a clinical
center.
Riverview is a major emergency health care provider to the poor,
and the head of the Detroit Medical Center criticized the move as a
burden on other providers and those they serve.
Karmanos says it plans a 20 (M) million-dollar renovation of
Riverview and will open the site in fall 2008, employing about a
thousand people.
Saint John's Health now owns Riverview, and its chief executive
says there are plenty of other sources of health services for the
poor in Detroit.
