SOO LOCKS
(2007-04-20)
(wgvu) - THE U-S HOUSE HAS VOTED TO REQUIRE THE ARMY CORPS
OF ENGINEERS TO BUILD A NEW SHIPPING LOCK AT SAULT STE. MARIE.
THE PROVISION WAS INCLUDED IN A WATER PROJECTS BILL PASSED
YESTERDAY.
IT STILL NEEDS APPROVAL OF THE SENATE AND PRESIDENT BUSH'S
SIGNATURE TO TAKE EFFECT.
SEPARATE LEGISLATION WOULD BE NEEDED TO PAY FOR THE NEW LOCK.
CONGRESS FIRST VOTED IN 1986 TO EXPAND THE SOO LOCKS SYSTEM. BUT
IT HAS NEVER COME UP WITH THE MONEY.
THE COMPLEX INCLUDES THREE FUNCTIONAL LOCKS ... BUT ONLY ONE
CAPABLE OF HANDLING THE BIGGEST FREIGHTERS.
CONGRESSMAN BART STUPAK OF MENOMINEE SAYS IF THE LOCK WERE
DISABLED, SHIPMENTS OF IRON ORE ON THE GREAT LAKES WOULD BE
DISRUPTED AND THE DOMESTIC STEEL INDUSTRY COULD BE CRIPPLED.
