LAWMAKERS QUESTIONING COLLEGES' SAFETY
questions about the safety of Michigan's college campuses in the
wake of the Virginia Tech massacre.
State Senator Wayne Kuipers, who held a hearing today about
university safety, says there were a lot of warning signs at
Virginia Tech about the gunmen.
Officials from Michigan State, Eastern Michigan and Western
Michigan universities testified about the challenges they face in
securing large campuses with hundreds of buildings, many road
entrances and tens of thousands of students.
One of the most difficult tasks, officials say, is balancing the
individual rights and privacy of students with emotional problems
with what's best for everyone as a whole.
