LANDFILL FEES
(2007-04-18)
(wgvu) - IT WOULD BECOME MORE EXPENSIVE TO DUMP
TRASH IN MICHIGAN LANDFILLS UNDER LEGISLATION THAT HAS PASSED THE
STATE HOUSE.
THE LEGISLATION PASSED LATE TUESDAY WOULD RAISE THE DUMPING FEE
FROM THE CURRENT 21 CENTS A TON TO 7 DOLLARS AND 50 CENTS A TON.
DEMOCRATS SAY THAT WOULD DRAMATICALLY REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF
CANADIAN AND OUT-OF-STATE TRASH NOW HEADED TO MICHIGAN LANDFILLS.
MICHIGAN IS A REGIONAL LEADER IN ATTRACTING OUT OF STATE TRASH,
WHICH IRRITATES SOME IN THE COMMUNITIES THAT DRAW OUT-OF-STATE
GARBAGE TRUCKS.
DEMOCRATS SAY THE MAJOR REASON MICHIGAN ATTRACTS SO MUCH GARBAGE
FROM OTHER PLACES IS BECAUSE ITS LANDFILL FEES ARE VERY LOW
COMPARED TO OTHER STATES.
REPUBLICANS SAY THE HIGHER LANDFILL CHARGE WOULD HURT MICHIGAN
BUSINESSES AND CITIZENS, WHO ALSO WOULD HAVE TO PAY THE INCREASED
FEE.
THE LEGISLATION NOW GOES TO THE STATE SENATE. IT COULD HAVE A
TOUGH TIME PASSING THERE BECAUSE THE SENATE IS LED BY REPUBLICANS.
