DIET-HEALTHY SCHOOLS
(2007-04-12)
(wgvu) - ABOUT 1,200 SIXTH-GRADERS IN ANN
ARBOR ARE TAKING PART IN AN AMBITIOUS EFFORT TO TACKLE OBESITY.
THE CITY'S FIVE MIDDLE SCHOOLS ARE UNDERGOING A THREE-YEAR-OLD
PROGRAM CALLED HEALTHY SCHOOLS.
THE PROJECT USES 20-MINUTE LESSONS, MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKERS AND
EYE-CATCHING PROPS TO TEACH KIDS ABOUT BASIC NUTRITION AND
ENCOURAGE EXERCISE. THE PROGRAM IS A COLLABORATION BETWEEN ANN
ARBOR PUBLIC SCHOOLS AND THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN HEALTH SYSTEM.
BY LAST SPRING, STUDENTS WHO WERE BEING TRACKED IN THE PROGRAM
IMPROVED IN EVERY MEDICAL SCREENING CATEGORY.
ORGANIZERS CHALK UP THE SUCCESS TO TEACHING GOOD EATING HABITS,
PROMOTING FITNESS, AND NUDGING SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS INTO OFFERING
HEALTHIER FOODS.
