Blades of Glory
(2007-04-06)
(wgvu) -
Blades of Glory is the latest comedic vehicle for Will Ferrell, who this time co-stars with Jon Heder, who came to fame as the title character in Napoleon Dynamite. Ferrell is Chazz Michael Phillips, a macho sex maniac who finishes up his skating routine with fire shooting from his shirt sleeves. Heder is Jimmy McElroy, who dresses in robin's egg blue, and unleashes a live dove while skating. The two are rival figure skaters who tie in the big tournament, but when they stand together to accept the Gold Medal, end up fighting each other, and setting fire to the tournament mascot. (clip) Both Jimmy and Chazz are banned from men's figure skating, but a loophole in the rule is that both could compete in paired figure skating. When the duo figure out it's too late for either to find a female partner, they register together to compete in pairs. This infuriates a brother sister team, the Van Waldenbergs, played by Amy Poeler and Will Arnett (clip). The sweet voiced little sister in that clip is Katie, played by Jenna Fischer, and she falls for Jimmy McElroy after her siblings send her to spy on him while he's training with Chazz. Meanwhile Chazz and Jimmy are becoming pals. (clip). Blades of Glory is a quick, funny movie that, like its stars, never breaks character. While it is not a masterpiece like Anchorman, or Napoleon Dynamite, its still worth watching.
