(wgvu) - A chaotic scene nearly overshadowed the Detroit
school board's vote tonight to close 34 schools.
Board members approved the plan as a way to trim a 200 (m)
million-dollar deficit. The board last month rejected a plan to
close 35 schools.
But the meeting was marred by shouting from audience members.
The situation worsened after one woman began throwing objects that
she later said were grapes at board members. The woman was led out
of the auditorium by police.
The schools are to close at the end of the current school year.
Eight additional schools will close in 2008 unless they can meet
enrollment targets.
