UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN-DIVERSITY
(2007-03-16)
(wgvu) - A TASK FORCE RECOMMENDS THAT THE
UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN SHOULD CREATE A CENTER FOR EDUCATIONAL
OUTREACH AS PART OF ITS EFFORT TO ENCOURAGE DIVERSITY IN THE WAKE
OF PROPOSAL 2.
THE REPORT RELEASED THURSDAY SUGGESTS THE UNIVERSITY ALSO SHOULD
INCREASE FINANCIAL SUPPORT AND RECOGNITION OF OUTREACH ACTIVITIES
TO UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES AS PART OF ITS PLAN.
THE ANN ARBOR SCHOOL IS OPERATING IN A DIFFERENT LEGAL CLIMATE
SINCE PROPOSAL 2 WAS PASSED BY MICHIGAN VOTERS IN NOVEMBER.
THE NEW LAW BANS THE USE OF RACE AND GENDER PREFERENCES AT
MICHIGAN UNIVERSITIES AND IN GOVERNMENT HIRING AND CONTRACTING.
THE UNIVERSITY SAYS IT HAS CHANGED ITS ADMISSIONS AND FINANCIAL
AID PROCESSES SO THEY NO LONGER CONSIDER RACE OR GENDER IN THE
DECISION-MAKING PROCESS.
