CAUTIOUS DEMOCRATS
(2007-03-15)
(wgvu) - DEMOCRATIC GOVERNOR GRANHOLM FACES A TOUGH
JOB GETTING THE PUBLIC TO ACCEPT HER PROPOSAL TO HELP BALANCE THE
BUDGET WITH A NEW TAX ON SERVICES.
BUT SHE MAY HAVE AN EVEN STIFFER CHALLENGE GETTING MEMBERS OF
HER OWN PARTY TO BACK THE IDEA IN THE LEGISLATURE.
SOME DEMOCRATS AREN'T WELCOMING THE "TWO-PENNY" TAX WITH OPEN
ARMS.
THEY COMPLAIN THAT IT SETS UP AN EXTRA TAX STRUCTURE FOR
BUSINESSES WHO WOULD COLLECT BOTH A SALES TAX AND A SERVICES TAX.
A BIGGER REASON FOR DEMOCRATS' HESITATION, THOUGH, IS PROBABLY
POLITICS.
DEMOCRATS WHO WON TOUGH ELECTIONS IN SWING DISTRICTS FEAR A VOTE
FOR HIGHER TAXES COULD HURT THEIR RE-ELECTION CHANCES.
