CANADIAN TRASH
(2007-03-12)
(wgvu) - A MACOMB COUNTY LANDFILL REMAINS A
LARGE IMPORTER OF CANADIAN TRASH DESPITE AN AGREEMENT WITH A WASTE
COMPANY LAST YEAR AIMED AT CURBING IMPORTED GARBAGE.
THE PINE TREE ACRES LANDFILL IS ABOUT 30 MILES NORTH OF DETROIT
IN LENOX TOWNSHIP AND IS OWNED BY WASTE MANAGEMENT.
THE STATE SAYS THAT PINE TREE ACRES GETS ABOUT HALF THE
ACROSS-THE-BORDER TRASH SENT TO MICHIGAN YEARLY.
THE DEAL DOESN'T REQUIRE AN IMMEDIATE CUTBACK IN THE TRASH
IMPORTS, AND A COMPANY SPOKESMAN SAYS IT COULD TAKE THREE TO FOUR
YEARS TO START PHASING OUT THE SHIPMENTS.
