LEGISLATIVE CUTS
(2007-03-05)
(wgvu) - THE GUARANTEE OF FREE HEALTH CARE COVERAGE
AT AGE 55 FOR LAWMAKERS WHO HAVE SERVED AT LEAST SIX YEARS AND THEN
LEAVE OFFICE MAY BE ABOUT TO END.
HOUSE DEMOCRATIC LEADERS SAID TODAY THAT THEY WANT TO END THE
LEGISLATIVE PERK FOR FUTURE LAWMAKERS.
THEY ALSO WANT TO REQUIRE CURRENT LAWMAKERS AND HOUSE EMPLOYEES
TO PAY THE SAME HEALTH CARE PREMIUMS OTHER STATE EMPLOYEES PAY.
THE PROPOSALS ARE PART OF AN EFFORT BY HOUSE DEMOCRATIC LEADERS
TO CUT THE HOUSE BUDGET BY MORE THAN FIVE PERCENT, A DECREASE OF
MORE THAN THREE MILLION DOLLARS.
A SPOKESMAN FOR SENATE MAJORITY LEADER MIKE BISHOP OF ROCHESTER
SAYS SENATE REPUBLICANS ARE REVIEWING THE PLAN.
HOUSE REPUBLICANS TODAY UNVEILED BILLS THEY SAY WOULD BRING MORE
ACCOUNTABILITY TO THE STATE BUDGET PROCESS.
