(wgvu) - OFFICIALS SAY MICHIGAN'S PRISONS ARE
NEARING CAPACITY.
THE STATE HAS MORE THAN 51-THOUSAND INMATES, AN ALL-TIME HIGH
AND UP 173 PERCENT FROM TWO DECADES AGO. CORRECTIONS OFFICIALS SAY
THE STATE WILL RUN OUT OF BED SPACE BY SEPTEMBER UNLESS IMMEDIATE
ACTION IS TAKEN.
GOVERNOR GRANHOLM IS PROPOSING THE RELEASE OF ABOUT 55-HUNDRED
NON-VIOLENT, LOW-RISK INMATES STARTING IN OCTOBER.
THAT'S HAILED AS WELCOME NEWS BY SOME, WHILE OTHERS WORRY ABOUT
THE IMPACT ON PUBLIC SAFETY.
THE STATE NOW SPENDS MORE ON CORRECTIONS THAN IT DOES SUPPORTING
HIGHER EDUCATION.
