DAIMLERCHRYSLER WILL SELL OFF ITS STRUGGLING U-S UNIT.
SPECULATION IS SWIRLING ABOUT POTENTIAL PARTNERS, OR EVEN A
BUYER.
THE POSSIBILITIES HAVE DRIVEN DAIMLERCHRYSLER SHARES UP BY 12
PERCENT SINCE IT FIRST SAID IT WAS MULLING ALL OPTIONS FOR
CHRYSLER.
HOW MUCH THE COMPANY MIGHT ASK FOR CHRYSLER ISN'T CERTAIN.
ESTIMATES RANGE FROM FIVE TO NEARLY 14 BILLION
DOLLARS.
CRITICS SAY CHRYSLER HAS DULLED THE SHEEN OF THE LEGENDARY
MERCEDES MARQUEE. CHRYSLER, UNTIL A YEAR AGO, HAD KEPT THE
AUTOMAKER PROFITABLE AMID QUALITY ISSUES AT MERCEDES.
DAIMLER-BENZ PAID 36 BILLION DOLLARS FOR THE AMERICAN ICON
IN 19-98.
