GREAT LAKES LEGISLATION
(2007-02-19)
(wgvu) - LEGISLATION TO PROTECT GREAT LAKES WATER IS BEING
FINALIZED BY THE STATES AND PROVINCES SURROUNDING THE LAKES.
THE AIM IS TO PREVENT THE WATER FROM BEING SIPHONED TO REGIONS
NOT IMMEDIATELY SURROUNDING THE LAKES.
STILL, ENVIRONMENTAL ADVOCATES WARN THAT THE AGREEMENT BENEFITS
DEVELOPERS RATHER THAN THE PUBLIC AND ISN'T TOUGH ENOUGH IN KEY
AREAS.
A LAWYER WITH THE SIERRA LEGAL DEFENSE FUND SAYS THERE AREN'T
ENOUGH RESTRICTIONS ON "INTRA-BASIN DIVERSIONS." THAT'S THE LEGAL
TRANSFER OF GREAT LAKES WATER AS LONG AS IT STAYS WITHIN THE GREAT
LAKES BASIN.
SIERRA ARGUES THAT INTRA-BASIN TRANSFERS SHOULD ONLY BE ALLOWED
WHEN THERE IS AN EQUAL RETURN FLOW OF WATER TO THE ORIGINAL SOURCE.
