WILL BE IN COURT LATER THIS MONTH ON CHARGES OF EMBEZZLING MONEY TO
SPECULATE IN PHONY NIGERIAN INVESTMENTS.
THOMAS KATONA, 56, IS SCHEDULED FOR A
HEARING FEBRUARY 28 THAT WILL DETERMINE IF THERE'S ENOUGH EVIDENCE TO SEND HIM TO TRIAL.
HE WAS FIRED LAST FALL AFTER ALLEGEDLY WIRING MORE THAN $186,000 FROM A COUNTY INVESTMENT POOL TO OVERSEAS
BANKS.
POLICE SAY MORE THAN $1.2 MILLION DOLLARS IS MISSING
... AND THEY THINK KATONA IS RESPONSIBLE.
THEY SAY MOST OF THE WIRE TRANSACTIONS DEPOSITED COUNTY FUNDS IN
ACCOUNTS LINKED TO A WELL-KNOWN SCAM IN NIGERIA.
SUCH SCHEMES OFTEN INVOLVE SENDING E-MAILS ASKING PEOPLE TO PAY
UP-FRONT COSTS TO HELP TRANSFER MILLIONS OF DOLLARS OUT OF
AFRICA.
