(2007-02-14)
(wgvu) - U-A-W CHIEF RON GETTELFINGER SAYS
DAIMLERCHRYSLER'S ANNOUNCEMENT IS DEVASTATING NEWS FOR UNION
WORKERS AND THEIR FAMILIES.
GETTELFINGER SAYS CHRYSLER'S RECENT LOSSES AREN'T THE FAULT OF
U-A-W MEMBERS, BUT THEY WILL SUFFER FOR IT.
THE AUTOMAKER SAYS 13,000 CHRYSLER WORKERS WILL LOSE THEIR
JOBS IN THE NEXT THREE YEARS AS IT CLOSES A PLANT AND REDUCES
SHIFTS AT OTHERS. THE RESTRUCTURING MAY LEAD TO A DAIMLERCHRYSLER
DIVORCE.
THE PLAN WAS ANNOUNCED HOURS AFTER DAIMLERCHRYSLER SAID IT WAS
CONSIDERING "STRATEGIC OPTIONS WITH PARTNERS" AFTER REPORTING A
40 PERCENT DROP IN FOURTH-QUARTER PROFIT.
THE JOB LOSSES ARE THE LATEST IN A YEARLONG SERIES OF
DEVASTATING CUTS IN THE AILING DOMESTIC AUTO INDUSTRY.
