SAME-SEX BENEFITS
(2007-02-08)
(wgvu) - NATIONAL GAY RIGHTS ADVOCATES ARE ALARMED
OVER A RECENT RULING REGARDING HEALTH BENEFITS FOR GAY PARTNERS.
THE MICHIGAN APPEALS COURT IS THE FIRST TO BAN GAYS AND LESBIANS
WHO WORK FOR GOVERNMENT AND STATE UNIVERSITIES FROM COVERING THEIR
PARTNERS IN THEIR HEALTH INSURANCE.
ADVOCATES FEAR THE DECISION COULD ENCOURAGE SIMILAR RULINGS IN
17 OTHER STATES WHOSE BANS ON GAY MARRIAGE COULD BE INTERPRETED TO
PROHIBIT DOMESTIC PARTNER BENEFITS FOR SAME-SEX COUPLES.
MANY STATES HAVE YET TO GRAPPLE WITH HOW THEIR GAY MARRIAGE BANS
APPLY TO SAME-SEX PARTNER BENEFITS. GAY COUPLES IN MICHIGAN PLAN TO
APPEAL TO THE STATE SUPREME COURT.
