GOP LEADERS PREPARE TO HASH OUT BUDGET
(2007-02-07)
(wgvu) - THE GOVERNOR IS EXPECTED TO ASK THE LEGISLATURE TO APPROVE AN EXPANSION TO THE SALES TAX IN HER BUDGET PROPOSAL THURSDAY.

IT WOULD PLACE A TWO PERCENT TAX ON MOST SERVICE-RELATED PURCHASES, INCLUDING MOVIE TICKETS AND HAIRCUTS.

HOUSE MINORITY LEADER CRAIG DEROCHE SAYS THE PLAN IS IRRESPONSIBLE.

HE SAYS THE GOVERNOR NEEDS TO PROPOSE CUTS IN STATE SPENDING BEFORE ASKING MICHIGAN TAXPAYERS FOR MORE.

THE GOVERNOR ASSERTS THAT A NEW TAX STRUCTURE IS NECESSARY TO PROP UP SPENDING ON THINGS LIKE WORKER RETRAINING PROGRAMS AND EDUCATION.

DEROCHE SAYS HE AGREES WITH THE GOVERNORS STANCE ON EDUCATION, BUT SAYS THERE ARE OTHER WAYS TO MAINTAIN THAT FUNDING.
