PRESCRIPTION PAINKILLERS
(2007-01-29)
(wgvu) - A MUSKEGON GYNECOLOGIST IS WAGING A
ONE-MAN CRUSADE ON PRESCRIPTION PAINKILLERS.
DOCTOR GUS BARKETT IS TARGETING VICODIN AND OXYCONTIN. THE DRUGS
ARE TWO OF THE MOST WIDELY USED AND ABUSED PRESCRIPTION PAINKILLERS
IN THE UNITED STATES, ACCORDING TO FEDERAL GOVERNMENT DATA.
BARKETT SAYS HE GENERALLY STOPPED PRESCRIBING VICODIN AND
OXYCONTIN IN 1995 BECAUSE THEY WERE SO ADDICTIVE. BARKETT SAYS HE
ONLY PRESCRIBES THOSE DRUGS TO PATIENTS WHO ARE ALLERGIC TO LESS
POTENT PAINKILLERS.
THE DRUGS ARE CLASSIFIED AS OPIOIDS. THEY PROVIDE QUICK RELIEF
FROM PAIN AND A SENSE OF EUPHORIA FOR SOME.
BUT ONCE A USER BECOMES HOOKED, THEY NEED LARGER DOSES FOR THE
DRUG TO BE EFFECTIVE.
