(wgvu) - A - POLICE SAY WHITEOUT SNOW
CONDITIONS WERE TO BLAME FOR A MASSIVE VEHICLE PILE-UP THAT CLOSED
PART OF A FREEWAY IN LAPEER COUNTY SUNDAY.
THE INCIDENT OCCURRED ABOUT 2:30 P-M ON INTERSTATE 69 JUST SOUTH
OF LAPEER. SCOTT RICHARDSON, A SPOKESMAN FOR THE COUNTY OFFICE OF
EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT, SAYS THE CRASH INVOLVED 20 CARS AND FOUR
SEMITRAILER TRUCKS.
RICHARDSON SAYS 12 PEOPLE WERE TAKEN TO HOSPITALS FOR INJURIES
BUT NO FATALITIES WERE REPORTED.
THE PILE-UP FORCED THE CLOSURE OF A FIVE-MILE STRETCH OF BOTH
THE EAST- AND WESTBOUND LANES.
THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAYS SIX TO TEN INCHES OF SNOW WAS
LIKELY BY TONIGHT IN HURON COUNTY. ONE TO TWO FEET OF SNOW WAS
POSSIBLE BY TONIGHT IN BERRIEN COUNTY IN SOUTHWEST MICHIGAN.
