SPORTS COMMISSION GETS FUNDING

(wgvu) - COUNTY OFFICIALS SAY THE COMMISSION WILL HELP DRAW MORE SPORTING EVENTS TO WEST MICHIGAN GIVING LOCAL HOTELS, RESTAURANTS, AND SHOPS A BOOST IN TRAFFIC.

THE KENT COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS THURSDAY APPOINTED ELEVEN PEOPLE TO SERVE ON THE COMMISSION'S EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE.

AND, THE GRAND RAPIDS-KENT COUNTY CONVENTION AND VISITORS BUREAU FORMALIZED A ONE-YEAR COMMITMENT OF $150,000 IN CASH AND IN-KIND SERVICE.

WAYMAN BRITT IS ASSISTANT KENT COUNTY ADMINISTRATOR AND VICE CHAIR OF THE SPORTS COMMISISON.

HE SAYS THE COMMISSION IS IN A GOOD POSITION TO START ITS WORK.

AMBASSADOR PETER SECCHIA LED A PRIVATE FUNDRAISING DRIVE TO RAISE NEARLY $230,000 FOR THE COMMISSION.

AND THE KENT COUNTY ARENA AUTHORITY HAS PLEDGED $25,000 DOLLARS.

THE COMMITTEE'S NEXT TASK IS TO FILL THE REMAINING 29 SPOTS ON THE COMMISSION.

BRITT SAYS THERE ARE OVER 100 APPLICANTS.
