TRANS FAT BAN
(2007-01-19)
(wgvu) - A SUBURBAN DETROIT OFFICIAL HAS PROPOSED
THAT OAKLAND COUNTY FOLLOW THE EXAMPLE OF NEW YORK CITY AND BAR
RESTAURANTS FROM USING ARTERY-CLOGGING TRANS FATS.
THE PROPOSAL BY COUNTY COMMISSIONER MARCIA GERSHENSON WOULD BAN
TRANS FATS FROM RESTAURANTS BY DECEMBER 2008.
TRANS FATS ARE CREATED WHEN VEGETABLE OIL IS TREATED WITH
HYDROGEN TO CREATE A LONGER SHELF LIFE.
SHE SAYS RESTAURANTS WOULDN'T PAY MORE BECAUSE THEY CAN SWITCH
TO SAFER OILS.
COMMISSIONER JEFF POTTER QUESTIONED WHETHER COUNTY GOVERNMENT
SHOULD BE GETTING INVOLVED IN THE ISSUE.
THE FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION NOW REQUIRES THAT TRANS-FATS BE
LISTED ON PACKAGED FOODS.
