STABENOW-TRADE
(2007-01-19)
(wgvu) - -S SENATOR DEBBIE STABENOW SAYS SHE WILL BE
PUSHING SEVERAL TRADE MEASURES KEY TO MANUFACTURERS.
SHE HOPES THE LEGISLATION CAN ADDRESS TRADE IMBALANCES WITH
CHINA.
STABENOW, A DEMOCRAT, SAYS SHE WILL REINTRODUCE A BILL TO CREATE
A TRADE PROSECUTOR. SHE ALSO WANTS TO PUSH A SEPARATE MEASURE
DEFINING CURRENCY MANIPULATION, WHICH MANUFACTURERS HAVE BLAMED FOR
MAKING THEM LESS COMPETITIVE.
STABENOW SAYS DEMOCRATS ACROSS THE BOARD ARE CONCERNED ABOUT
ENFORCING TRADE VIOLATIONS.
AMERICAN MANUFACTURERS CONTEND THAT CHINA IS ARTIFICIALLY
DEPRESSING THE VALUE OF THE CHINESE YUAN BY AS MUCH AS 40 PERCENT.
THIS WOULD MAKE CHINESE GOODS CHEAPER FOR AMERICAN CONSUMERS WHILE
MAKING U-S PRODUCTS MORE EXPENSIVE IN CHINA.
