LAKESHORE PROMISE
(2007-01-11)
(wgvu) - HOLLAND AREA SCHOOLS COULD BE GETTING A
"PROMISE" OF THEIR OWN.
LEADERS OF THE KALAMAZOO PROMISE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM ARE MEETING
WITH HOLLAND OFFICIALS TODAY TO ADVISE THEM HOW TO SET UP A SIMILAR
PROGRAM.
THE KALAMAZOO SCHOLARSHIP GIVES COLLEGE TUITION TO EVERY
GRADUATE WHO MEETS CERTAIN RESIDENCY AND ENROLLMENT STANDARDS. IT'S
FUNDED BY A PRIVATE DONOR.
A HOLLAND BUSINESSMAN PROPOSES THAT THE POTENTIAL "LAKESHORE
PROMISE" ENACT A 1.5% HOMEOWNERS' TAX.
STATE LAW DOESN'T ALLOW SUCH A TAX, BUT LAWMAKERS COULD CHANGE
IT.
THE HOLLAND PROGRAM WOULD BENEFIT GRADUATES OF HOLLAND AND
ZEELAND HIGH SCHOOLS.
