AFFIRMATIVE ACTION
(2007-01-10)
(wgvu) - THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN SAYS IT WILL
CONTINUE ITS LEGAL FIGHT AGAINST THE AFFIRMATIVE ACTION CURBS BUT
WILL COMPLY WITH THEM IN THE INTERIM.
THE ANN ARBOR SCHOOL AND OTHERS HAD SOUGHT MORE TIME TO SWITCH
TO ADMISSIONS AND FINANCIAL AID SYSTEMS THAT DON'T GIVE
PREFERENTIAL TREATMENT BASED ON RACE OR SEX.
THE UNIVERSITY HAD SUSPENDED ITS ADMISSIONS PROCESS.
BUT IT NOW SAYS THAT ADMISSIONS WILL RESUME TODAY AND WILL
COMPLY WITH PROPOSAL TWO, AN AMENDMENT TO THE STATE CONSTITUTION
THAT WON VOTER APPROVAL NOVEMBER SEVENTH.
FEDERAL COURTS REJECTED THE UNIVERSITY'S REQUEST TO DELAY THE
EFFECTIVENESS OF PROPOSAL TWO.
OTHER OPPONENTS OF THE ANTI-AFFIRMATIVE MEASURE CONTINUE THEIR
LEGAL FIGHT.
