COP CLEARED IN SHOOTING

(wgvu) - A FORENSIC INVESTIGATION INTO THE SHOOTING OFF OF EAST BELTLINE AVENUE IN NOVEMBER FOUND THE SUSPECT DARRELL NORWOOD ACTUALLY MORTALLY SHOT HIMSELF; THE BULLET PASSING THROUGH HIS HEAD STRIKING OFFICER JAMES MORNINGSTAR.

IT HAPPENED DURING A TRAFFIC STOP IN A CHURCH PARKING LOT AFTER A SHORT CHASE.

THE INVESTIGATION FOUND 40-YEAR-OLD DARRELL NORWOOD USED A 38-CALIBER REVOLVER TO SHOOT HIMSELF IN THE HEAD AS OFFICER MORNINGSTAR APPROACHED THE VEHICLE THE BULLET ALSO HIT MORNINGSTAR.

THE OFFICER RETURNED FIRE, UNAWARE NORWOOD HAD KILLED HIMSELF.

MORNINGSTAR WAS TREATED FOR A GUNSHOT WOUND TO THE ARM AND RELEASED FROM THE HOSPITAL THE SAME DAY. HE'S EXPECTED TO RETURN TO WORK IN THE NEXT TWO MONTHS.
