JUDGE: CITY VIOLATES CHURCH'S RIGHTS
of Southfield violated a church's rights by denying it access to a
building it purchased in 2004.
U-S District Judge Paul Gadola ruled yesterday the city violated
a federal law that blocks governments from imposing land use
regulations that discriminate against religious organizations. The
city says the Lighthouse Community Church of God never obtained a
certificate of occupancy and violates other zoning laws.
The city had sought to have the lawsuit against it thrown out.
The church is now able to use the building for office space and
says it will file a motion requesting that it also be allowed to
hold services there.
