ATTEMPTED ASSASSIN MOURNS FORD
(2007-01-03)
(wgvu) - Sara Jane Moore tried to assassinate
President Gerald Ford in 1975.
Now she says she was wrong to try, and she mourns his death.
Moore was only 40 feet away from Ford when she fired a single
shot at him outside a San Francisco hotel. A man standing next to
her pushed her arm up as the gun discharged, so Ford wasn't hit.
Now 76, Moore is serving a life sentence.
Moore said she was blinded by her radical political views at the
time. She was convinced that the government had declared war on the
left.
She also expressed sadness at news of Ford's death -- even
though she says people have always said that he would have to die
before she could be paroled.
