Barrel racing in Gretna
Investors spent $20 million to build a race track in Gretna. Owners used barrel racing, a rodeo sport, to qualify for licenses for a poker room and they hope eventually slot machines. Other race track operators are in court trying to get the racing license revoked. They say a barrel race is not a legitimate horse race. Scott says the Legislature needs to clear up any confusion about what is a legal pari-mutuel activity.
"It's not a positive if people go and invest dollars and don't know whether something is in compliance with laws or not. I think it is incumbent upon everybody in the legislative process and to the extent I can have an impact on that it is clear what you can and can't do."
Scott said he wants the legislature to act before Gadsden County voters decide whether to allow the Gretna casino to operate slot machine. That election is set for Jan. 31.
