"Icon of Evil: Hitler’s Mufti and the Rise of Radical Islam" by David G. Dalin and John F. Rothmann (Random House)

by Adam Schwartz

Adam Schwartz interviews Middle East scholar John F. Rothmann, co-author of a new book, Icon of Evil: Hitler's Mufti and the Rise of Radical Islam. The book describes the politics of Haj Amin al-Husseini, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem between the two world wars. Rothmann discusses how the Mufti collaborated with Hitler on the extermination of European Jewry and help foment anti-Semitism in Palestine, how al-Husseini melded religion and politics, and al-Husseini's connection to the modern Palestinian movement.
