3rd Annual Pioneer Day - Merritt Island

The festivities will take place at two Merritt Island locations, Sams House at Pine Island and St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. Events are ongoing throughout the day and include live music, food, art & craft vendors, living history demonstrations, artifact & historic clothing displays, historical house and chapel tours, educational booths, special presentations from modern pioneers, and more. Pioneer Day is sponsored by the non-profit Pine Island Preservation Society and all proceeds are used to benefit education programs at Sams House at Pine Island.

Events at Sams House (ongoing from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.):
•Living History Demonstrations and Educational Exhibits (including Confederate Sons Association, Florida History Display, Central Florida Fossils, Florida Public Archeology Network, Florida Wildlife Hospital, and Brevard Museum of History and Science)
•Crafts Fair and Farmer's Market (including Better by Candlelight, Cape Canaveral Lighthouse Foundation, Coiled Vessels by Teresa Camarata, Mrs. Mango & Company, Natural Blessings, Nonna'D's Olive Pit, Spade & Trowel Garden Club, The Coastal Marketplace, The Dip Gourmet, and The Green Marketplace)
•Historic House and Cabin Tours by guides in period clothing
•Display of Sams Family Artifacts and Historic Clothing (never-before seen)
•Florida Folk Music by Chris Kahl (12:30 to 2:30) and Celery City String Band (11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.)
•Children's Crafts and Games
•Guided Hikes
•Food by Slow & Low Bar-B-Que

Summary of Events at St. Luke's (10 a.m. to 7 p.m.):
•On-going Self-guided Chapel and Cemetery Tours
•10:30 a.m.: Demonstration by Highwayman Artist RL Lewis
•Noon: Homemade Soups ($5)
•1 p.m.: Rosemary McGill, & "A man named JUSTICE, a lady named LIBERTY, and a land called FREEDOM"
•1 p.m. to 4 p.m.: Molly Thomas, Historic Preservation of Cemeteries
•2:30 p.m.: Presentation on Life of John Sams
•4 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.: Fish Fry ($9 advance purchase tickets)
•7 p.m.: Concert by Florida Folk Musicians Michael Koppy and Frank Lindamood ($10 advance purchase tickets)
