Oct. 13--Annual SCJS Picnic and Jazz Jam
The Rich Abrahams Quartet will provide the music and the Space Coast Jazz Society will provide the hot dogs and hamburgers at 2 PM on Sunday, Oct. 13, at the annual SCJS picnic and jazz jam.
For the fifth year in a row, the event will be held at the Riverfront Rotary Park off Rte. 1 in Melbourne.
As usual, the picnic is for members only and their guests and for students. There is no charge but members are asked to bring a side dish, a salad or a dessert. The SCJS will provide hamburgers, hot dogs, iced tea, lemonade and coffee as well as paper plates, napkins and plastic silverware. Picnickers may bring their own beer and wine.
Abrahams is a well-known pianist who has performed at many popular jazz venues in Brevard. He will be accompanied by Ernie Wilson on bass, Dennis Walton on drums and Syl Lafata on clarinet.
There will be a sign-up sheet for musicians who want to sit in on the jam. The quartet will play the first set and the jam will be the second set.
Rotary Park got rave reviews from SCJS members the last four years--including two years ago when it was held on a stormy day. The band plays in a rustic setting with terrific acoustics and a great water view. There's plenty of room for dancing. Seating areas are covered and there are play areas for children.
Nonmembers can attend by purchasing annual memberships ($15 for singles, $25 for couples) at the picnic. Memberships purchased after Oct. 1 have an expiration date of Jan. 1, 2015
Rotary Park is on the east side of Route 1 at the intersection of Suntree Blvd. and Route 1. It is about a mile north of the Pineda Cswy. Come early if you want to help setting up. Or stay late and help with the cleanup. For more info, call Pat Aiken at 777-3494.
See you there, come rain or come shine.
