ROUSE: Concerto for Flute and Orchestra TCHAIKOVSKY: Symphony No. 6 Sandra del Cid, flute This program brims with musical color and fiery passion. Sandra del Cid joins the Space Coast Symphony to present the Florida Premiere of Christopher Rouse¡¯s Concerto for Flute and Orchestra. In part a nod to his Celtic heritage, Christopher Rouse¡¯s Flute Concerto has been hailed as ¡°a certifiable hit¡± (The Detroit Free Press). Completed in 1993, the five-movement work conjures Irish folk music, from slow, reflective movements, to spirited jigs. The third movement stands as a mournful tribute to James Bulger, the young British boy brutally murdered in a Liverpool subway by a pair of 10©\year©\old boys in February 1993. The evening closes with Tchaikovsky's final testament, the Sixth, certainly his greatest symphony, as gripping an experience as can be found in a concert hall. The ¡°Path¨¦tique¡± is famous for its juxtaposition of emotions. You¡¯ll feel the power of fate in both life and death as you get caught up in the music¡¯s sweep of emotion, complete with gorgeous violin melodies and blazing brass. |
